ATHENS (Reuter) - Police in northern Greece were investigating on Tuesday whether the hanging death of a British actor playing Judas in a Greek hotel's production of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar was an accident or suicide. Anthony Bruce Wheeler, 26, whose passport was issued in Liverpool, died of strangulation before hundreds of guests, coroner Nikos Vassiliadis told Reuters by telephone from the northern city of Salonika. "The death was a result of strangulation by rope. It is either an accident or a suicide but that's for the police to decide," he said. More than 600 spectators watched as Wheeler's body dangled from a prop rope during the Sunday night show at the Sani Beach Hotel on the northern Greek Chalkidiki peninsula. Hotel manager Dimitris Hatziyannakis told Reuters by telephone the young entertainer had performed in the same show for three years and was experienced with the hanging props. Wheeler was supposed to suspend himself from a scaffold on the stage of an open-air theatre in the hotel grounds and free himself safely when the lights were out. Police in Salonika would not reveal their findings so far and said their investigation was continuing.
