BRATISLAVA (SITA) - Slovak parliamentary deputies failed to elect a new president for Slovakia in the first ballot of the third round of presidential elections on Thursday. The second ballot of the third round of the presidential elections is scheduled for April 30. Brigita Schmögnerová candidate for the Party of the Democratic Left (SDL) received support from 43 deputies while 71 said rejected her and 11 abstained from voting. Milan Sečanský, running for the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), received 59 votes of support and 25 Nays while 41 deputies abstained from voting. Factionless deputy Miroslav Kočnár`s Zdeno Šuška received 5 YES and 63 NO while 57 deputies abstained from voting. Brigita Schmögnerová and Milan Sečanský will run in the second ballot of the third round of the presidential elections. The two previous rounds failed to produce a president. In the first round (January 29 and February 6), Štefan Markuš ran for the presidency on the Slovak Democratic Coalition (SDK) ticket while Juraj Hraško ran for the Party of the Democratic Left (SDL) and Anton Kurek (Bus driver`s Trade Union fellow) was Kočnár`s candidate. In the second round, held on March 5 and March 19, the nominees were Ladislav Ballek (fielded by SDL) and Milan Fogaš (Kočnár).
