year-old president, who has suffered breathing difficulties and an abscess in his abdomen after the operation to remove part of his large intestine on April 14, left by air ambulance accompanied by his wife Dagmar. Havel was visited before his departure from Innsbruck University hospital by Austrian President Thomas Klestil. The president`s doctors have said he will probably have to spend another 10 days or so recuperating in hospital in Prague. All his engagements have been cancelled until the end of May. Surgeons removed about 30 cm (12 inches) of Havel`s intestine after he became ill while on holiday with his wife in the Tyrolean Alps. The president`s general health has not been good since he underwent a lung cancer operation in December, 1996. He nearly died of pneumonia and other complications after that surgery. He was fitted with a colostomy bag during the emergency surgery, which is likely to be removed in a routine procedure. The former playwright, who led Prague`s bloodless overthrow of communism in 1989, narrowly won re-election for a final five-year term in January.
