KINSHASA (Reuters) - Rebels and forces loyal to President Laurent Kabila fought on the outskirts of the capital Kinshasa on Wednesday, with artillery fire near the airport, state radio and government sources said. The sound of heavy artillery explosions could be heard all over the city of more than five million people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The radio said that the fighting was taking place on the road to Kimbanseke, a sprawling and populous dictrict
near the capital`s airport, which is about 30 km (20 miles) north of the city centre. It said the operation followed the capture of three infiltrators who revealed the presence of fellow infiltrators in the area. Kabila`s forces and their Zimbabwean allies had earlier blocked a rebel advance on the road approaching the city from the southwest. The rebels took up arms in the east on August 2. Kabila accuses Uganda and Rwanda of invading to fight alongside the rebels. Both deny the charge but independent sources say Rwanda is involved.
