Maďarská vláda začala na hranici so Srbskom budovať plot. Nie je to obyčajný plot. Oceľové výbežky, ostré ako britva majú ochrániť krajinu pred utečeneckou vlnou, najväčšou v Európe od skončenia druhej svetovej vojny. V noci z pondelka na utorok potom zavreli hranice.

Na srbsko-maďarských hraniciach pri juhomaďarskom mestečku Röszke zvážali utečencov na vlakovú stanicu. Odtiaľ smerovali na hranice s Rakúskom. Do začiatku platnosti zákona, ktorý za ilegálne prekročenie hranice hrozil až päťročným väzením ostávalo necelých desať hodín. Zároveň tu maďarská polícia chystala špeciálne upravený vozeň, ktorým chceli "upchať" posledné priechodné miesto na zelenej hranici - železničnú trať, ktorou do Maďarska v posledných dňoch prišli tisíce utečencov.

Päť hodín pred polnocou polícia zelenú hranicu zatvorila. Utečenci mohli na prechod do Maďarska použiť už iba oficiálny hraničný prechod medzi srbským mestom Horgoš a maďarským Röszke. Autobusy ich odtiaľ až do polnoci prevážali na železničnú stanicu.

Na srbskej strane hraníc pri meste Horgoš uviazla v utorok asi tisícka ľudí, ku ktorým ale postupne pribúdali ďalší. Prichádzali s cieľom dostať sa do Maďarska a potom ďalej na Západ. Maďarská strana však bola nekompromisná. Nad hranicou lietal policajný vrtuľník a z druhej strany plota všetko kontrolovala polícia a armáda.
