Verejné školstvo v Barme je v kríze: školy sa rozpadávajú, nedostatočne vzdelaní učitelia zle učia deti a mnoho rodín si nemôže dovoliť ani to málo.

Učebnice sú príliš drahé, rovnako ako školské uniformy. Kláštorné školy sú preto pre väčšinu detí jedinou možnosťou, ako získať aspoň nejaké vzdelanie.

Bahan Thone Htat, kláštornú školu v najväčšom barmskom meste Rangún navštevuje osemdesiatpäť detí - väčšina z nich sú budhistickí novici a chudbné deti z ulice.

Kláštory si tak v krajine udržiavajú svoju tradičnú úlohu: poskytujú vzdelanie a zdravotnú starostlivosť.
