LONDON - American actress and singer Jennifer Lopez has laughed off reports she postponed a planned Valentine‘s Day wedding to her actor fiance Ben Affleck. „It was not put off,“ she told BBC television, adding that no wedding date had been set. „The whole February 14 (story) was a made up thing by the tabloid,“ she said, referring to an article in the U.S. celebrity magazine „Star“. She said the rumour spread round the world after other media picked up the original report. Newspapers claimed the pair, who were engaged last year, had wanted to marry in Puerto Rico on Valentine‘s Day.
„J.Lo“ dazzled the crowds on Wednesday night at the British premiere of her new film, the romantic comedy „Maid in Manhattan“. Wearing a figure-hugging beige Yves Saint Laurent evening dress and white jacket, she spent more than 20 minutes meeting hundreds of fans in London‘s Leicester Square.
The 32-year-old arrived without her fiance and swept down the red carpet with her British co-stars Ralph Fiennes and Natasha Richardson.
The Daily Telegraph said she had booked 14 suites at London‘s exclusive Metropolitan Hotel for 9,000 pounds ($14,220) a night. Other British newspapers said she brought a 25-strong entourage to London including dieticians and make-up artists. Lopez said she identified with the character she plays in the film — Marisa Ventura, a working-class girl from the Bronx who falls in love with a top politician. „I really understood who she was, being from the same background,“ Bronx-born Lopez told the BBC. „It deals with…how the working class and upper class relate to each other.“ „Maid in Manhattan“ was given a rough ride by U.S. critics and earned Lopez a nomination for the Golden Raspberry awards — a jokey U.S. ceremony for bad films. Despite the criticism, the film opened at number one in the North American box office last December, taking $19 million (13 million pounds) in its first three days.
